How Much Are You Willing to Spend on Skin Care That’s Not Working?

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on Skin Care That’s Not Working?

How much are you willing to spend on skin care that’s not working?

Here at Clear Skin Solutions, we frequently have instances of clients coming to us with a skin care routine that they think is safe and effective but are also not completely happy with their results… only for it to be neither!

Y’all, trust us: just because a product says it’s “non-comedogenic/chemical-free”, has a high price tag, and/or is from a big brand, it doesn’t guarantee quality. In fact, it means that if you have acne, due to the dysfunction of the pore they’ll likely continue to break you out due to the formulations! Buzzwords like “all natural”, “chemical-free”, and “non-comedogenic” are all words used for marketing… it doesn’t guarantee that they actually are!

Let’s take a look at why that’s the case:

What Makes “Good” Skin Care?

When it comes to building a skin care routine, you need to be covering your basics of cleansing, toning, moisturizing, sun-protecting, pro-aging, and, of course, acne-treating– but the effectiveness of those steps rely entirely on the products you pick for them.

“Good” skin care is classified as skin care that is formulated by experts who understand the skin’s function using science-backed ingredients and formulations. Generally, specific products should be recommended to you by a professional to ensure that their active ingredients play well with your unique skin type and needs– rather than going to the drugstore yourself and throwing proverbial spaghetti at the wall until something sticks! (Or doesn’t, in most cases.) Even if you opt for “pro” products, it’s likely they still won’t have the right ingredient formulations your skin barrier needs to function at its best… meaning that striking out on your own is a no-win situation!

Unless you’ve been trained about skin care formulations, it’s impossible to wing it and have a good result… which is why our Skin Therapists do the heavy lifting (and research!) for you by working closely with the lab to ensure that no non-Clear Skin Solutions approved ingredients sneak into new batches. (Labs will oftentimes swap ingredients if they run out, not realizing the impact that has on the skin!)

Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid

If you’re wondering if your current skin care routine is giving your complexion grief, the answer is probably “yes”. This can look like not seeing results, seeing minimal results, seeing negative results when trying to incorporate pro-aging products, or, most often, getting short-term relief for your acne only for it to come creeping back in over time!

When in doubt, toss anything you own that contains any of the following ingredients (because why would you keep using something that isn’t working for your skin?):

  • SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a sudsing agent oftentimes found in cleansers, body washes, shampoos and laundry detergents)
  • Most alcohols (a drying agent that can strip your skin of its natural oils and damage your skin barrier)

Just imagine: you spend your hard-earned money on anti-aging and acne products… only for them to be canceling each other out! Acne products typically dry out the skin, while anti-aging products tend to have ingredients that can cause breakouts… often making it so, when you’re using non-CSS products, you have to choose one over the other.

When it comes to the long-term, sticking with Skin Therapist-approved products is the best (and only, really!) way to ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck in terms of the products you’re using. Only a skin care specialist who understands both acne and aging (and ingredient formulations), can advise you on which products to use to get clear without compromising your anti-aging efforts… and only Clear Skin Solutions has the compassion and know-how required to keep an eye on all the important formulations– meaning that you won’t be sold products that secretly contain pore-clogging or irritating ingredients! Those “big brands” are simply too big to insert that level of personalized care and attention to detail for each product batch.
